At the request of the South Dakota Association of County Commissioners and the South Dakota Association of County Officials, the month of April has been designated as County Government Month in South Dakota. By focusing all month on local government, the public can better understand all the duties that the counties perform for the constituents they serve.
The theme for this year's County Government Month is "Serving Veterans, Armed Forces and Their Families". The public was invited to visit the different departments and to take part in the activites offered during the month of April. On Thursday, April 7th, from noon until 1:15, there was a luncheon and program in the Community Room at the Courthouse, featuring Dr. Donna Small, MD, Medical Director for the VA Clinic in Aberdeen, and SGT David Nichols from the SD National Guard. SGT Nichols spoke about what it means to be deployed and how it affects those deployed and their families. Helping to sponsor the lunch was the local VFW and Legion members. On Tuesday, April 12 the Government Class of Doland High School visited the courthouse. They ‘followed’ a piece of property through the whole process of its travel through county government. They also had a tour of the Sheriff’s Office. |
